#dgbride: Jaime

September 28, 2018

Our beautiful bride, Jaime, married her soulmate, Caleb, on August 10, 2018. They planned their intimate destination wedding in Rocky Mountain National Park, surrounded by beautiful mountain scenery and rolling fields.

Jaime wanted her big day to be as relaxed and laid back as possible. With such gorgeous natural backdrops, the couple decided they wanted to keep their details minimal, matching the greenery to the surrounding natural foliage. She wanted to keep the atmosphere of the entire day stress free and focused on the mountains!

Their primary color palette included wine, greenery, and neutrals such as blush and grey. Combined with the golden hour sunlight, their pictures were a perfect transition from late summer into early autumn. The pops of vibrant merlot combined with the bridal party’s different textures created such depth. Her bridesmaids featured sequinning and velvet while the groomsmen donned tweed suits.

When it comes to planning their big day, Jaime utilized elopement help! “Marry Me in Colorado” is a destination wedding planning service that allows out of town brides an easier time planning and executing their destination dreams. Different packages included different services, but Jaime utilized “Marry Me in Colorado” for a wedding day coordinator, popular ceremony spots, officiants, hair and makeup recommendations, cakes, and more! When it comes to destination wedding services, however, Jaime has some great advice.

“They were helpful, but if I could go back, I would just hire an officiant and purchase a permit directly through Rocky Mountain National Park to get married there. Since my wedding was very small and low key, there were a lot of extras I didn’t need!”

Jaime’s favorite memory of her wedding day was her first look with her husband, Caleb. Jaime was unsure of whether to do a first look, but eventually decided having the small, quiet moment with Caleb prior to their ceremony was important – and she’s glad she did! The two exchanged personal vows between each other before saying vows publicly during their ceremony.

“It was such an intimate and surreal moment,” Jaime said. “I love that I have photos and video to re-live the moment whenever I want.”

Creating Jaime’s wedding day look was a little different than the traditional bridal experience. Jaime’s dress featured separates added together to create a customized bridal gown. The skirt, topper, and belt were curated specifically for her perfect bridal look! Her off-the-shoulder lace topper was perfect for her bohemian vibe and the tulle skirt gave her a comfortable fit for the entire day – and fit the whimsical, romantic mountain scenery. Jaime’s dress was the perfect combination of chic and stylish, along with comfortable for her outdoor ceremony!

“I knew from the minute I got engaged I wanted lace and I wanted sleeves,” Jaime said of her bridal experience. “I’ve always adored the ‘boho’ style and Katie NAILED it with matching pieces that originally didn’t even go together! It was pretty much spot on for what I imagined in my head.”

“My experience was nothing short of amazing,” Jaime said. “Katie and all the other girls at Dress Gallery were very helpful and so sweet. They even helped me pick out jewelry during my final fitting!”

Jaime’s final words are GREAT words of advice for newly engaged brides: “Do what YOU want. Why waste the money on something that’s not going to make you happy?”

We concur! This intimate, mountainous getaway seems so cozy and special – a perfect representation of Jaime and Caleb’s love. We congratulate you both and wish you a lifetime of happiness!

Thank you to Kara and Mackenzie Photography for the photos!

Ten 2019 Wedding Trends We LOVE

September 14, 2018

For those brides who are looking for their ceremonies to stay trendy and fresh, there’s a huge variety of styles that allow you to custom curate your special day. These are some of the trends we’re seeing as brides begin to plan their 2019 weddings and we LOVE them. Add one or even a few to your own reception or ceremony to help create a trendy, yet timeless, look!

We are LOVING the mixed metals and multiple metallic looks! Gunmetal, silver, gold, rose gold, and more all mixed together can help give your wedding an interesting, “edgy” vibe without going over the top on color. Plus, since metals often serve as the neutral color in a color palette, this is the perfect opportunity to let your jewelry and details make a statement! Spice up your wedding with “rocker-chic” vibes by adding a chunky mixed metal necklace or multiple stacked bracelets.

Trend #2: SUIT UP

Sayonara, overt femininity and hello, androgyny! Bridal suits, whether two pieces or just a jumpsuit, have taken over the bridal runway. Perfect for tomboy brides or someone wanting to feel extra unique on their wedding day, bridal jumpsuits are rising in popularity due to their modern silhouette and comfortable design. Who doesn’t love a comfortable jumpsuit to party the night away in?

These are NOT your grandmother’s wedding dresses! Modern day brides are shying away from traditional white and ivory gowns and instead are focusing on more ways to bring color into their wedding – including their own gowns! While pastel colors still reign supreme (think blush, periwinkle, or silver), there are more than a few designers adding vibrant splashes to their collection. It’s a surefire way to stand out during your wedding!

While the trend in outdoor weddings will never fully go away, more and more brides are preferring indoor venues with open-air concepts or closed venues with tons of greenery to brighten up the space. For outdoor enthusiasts who would love some extra green in their wedding, but can’t/don’t like outdoor weddings, bringing greenery into your décor is a perfect way to make your ceremony feel romantic and intimate. Popular options now include eucalyptus vines, palm leaves, and even wheat bundles – a personal favorite of ours here in the Heartland.

We genuinely feel like videographers don’t often get the credit they deserve. Instead of your traditional wedding highlight reel, many videographers are going above and beyond for their couples by creating spectacular memories. The most popular method is utilizing drones, particularly for those gorgeous overhead shots. Birds’ eye view perspectives have become extremely popular, along with occasional “gag reel” supplied by your videographer of all the days’ best goofs! Ask your vendor professional if they have the capability to do these unique features for you.

Finally, the men get some love! While mismatching bridesmaids’ dresses have been popular for quite some time, for some reason, the other side of the aisle has stayed traditionally matching. Now, grooms especially are spicing up their party by allowing each of their groomsmen a unique look. Stay within the wedding color palette and this funky variety look will surely be a hit at your event!

Royal wedding inspiration is in full swing! Instead of the traditional veil, many brides have been swapping out the tulle for a unique tiara or extra-sparkly hair pins. Some brides are even “pulling a Meghan” with both accessories including! With the beautiful, messy low-bun we’ve been seeing on a lot of brides, tiaras and hair pieces have become our newest favorite trend. We love seeing the brides curate their outfit, complete with hair!

A memento from your wedding used to be standard fare for many couples, but the guests’ party favors have fallen out of favor in recent years. Instead of spending money on small keepsakes, brides and grooms instead are budgeting to create a unique guest experience. Mobile camper photobooths, magicians, specialty cocktails, lipstick “touch up” bars, or complimentary cigars on the patio are just some examples of “extra” guests experience options that enhance your attendee’s enjoyment but avoids the mundane favors.

While there’s nothing new about adding pieces of your favorite movies, books, music, or more to your wedding, having your preferred fandom make appearance throughout the night is a fun way to keep guests guessing. Many brides and grooms are opting for “geeky” details to help personalize their wedding. Whether ending your vows with “Live long and prosper” or waving wands at each other during your photos, there are plenty of ways to geekify your ceremony without making your love of fantasy/sci-fi the focus.

Geodes, minerals, crystals, and other natural stones are making a huge impact in the wedding world. These organic-looking elements add a touch of edge to your event while still maintaining a romantic, elegant vibe. We’ve seen brides use geodes as interesting table placements/seating chart cards to wearing minerals in their hair to even having their engagement rings be natural stone! Don’t be afraid to use Mother Nature’s most beautiful gems to help give your day a unique feel.

#dgbride: Ciera

September 10, 2018

Dress Gallery bride Ciera married her soulmate, Devan, on May 19, 2018 at Fulton Valley Farms in Towanda, KS. After 5 years of being together, this couple was ready to celebrate their #VowsInTheValley! (How cute is their wedding hashtag, btw? Shocker fans for life!)

For Ciera and Devan, having an outdoor ceremony and an indoor reception was high on their priority list. However, with a May wedding in Kansas, the weather can be unpredictable. Ciera loved the flexibility of Fulton Valley Farms, as they offered an inside ceremony should inclement weather arise. Thankfully, there was no need! Their open air wedding was full of love and sunshine for their special day.

Ciera didn’t want an “overly rustic” feeling to her wedding, which made Fulton Valley a perfect choice. Their color palette of blues, ivory, and silvers kept their wedding theme classic, complete with muscle cars and fun backdrops for photos! Also included were the beautiful colored string lights that gave their nighttime reception an ethereal glow.

When it came to picking out a wedding dress, Ciera was a bride who had a sharp idea of what she wanted. “My dress was fairly simple,” she said. “I didn’t want anything poofy, strapless, or with lace. Instead, I wanted something that was going to be comfortable and easy to move in. My ideal dress was going to have an open back and small detail. The dress I ended up choosing was similar to what I had pictured in my head.”

“I tried on five or six dresses and only visited Dress Gallery,” Ciera said of her experience. “I got the dress the first day I went. I’m normally really indecisive, so I didn’t want to go to too many places and give myself too many options. Plus, I knew from my friends’ experience that I wanted to purchase at Dress Gallery. Jillian has a great eye for locating things that fit your style but will also look great on you!”
Ciera was a superwoman and planned the majority of her wedding herself. Utilizing Pinterest, Facebook wedding groups, and friends & family, she kept organized and focused on her vision to see everything come to fruition. Some of her advice? “Get a videographer! For real. I can’t even tell you how many times I have watched our wedding highlight video. It is the perfect reminder of how great our day was. It’s something I’ll get to cherish forever and have to show our future children.” (To take a peek at Ciera & Devan’s highlight video, click here!)
Also important to remember on wedding day is Ciera’s next piece of advice – don’t stress! “You’re not getting married for the wedding. You’re getting married for the relationship. Even if you spill something on your dress, lose the ring (which momentarily happened with my husband’s wedding band on our big day – luckily it was found in the grass hours later!), or forget something, you’re still getting married to the love of your life at the end of the day.”
Ciera wasn’t the only #DGGirl in her wedding party, either – all of her bridesmaids and her flower girl also became #DGGirls as well! We love it when brides trust us with making their loved ones look at beautiful as possible standing next to them. Ciera chose matching classic cornflower blue chiffon dresses for her girls, which made her ivory and silver accents really sparkle! She picked up her accessories and headbands from our jewelry department, too! Look at this GIRL SQUAD GOALS.
When we asked Ciera her favorite memory from her wedding, even she was surprised at the answer. “My favorite memory by far was our first dance. It’s funny because I thought that I wouldn’t like this part that much (I’m not a big dancer and first dances always seemed awkward.) But our DJ moved our dance floor outside and told everyone to gather in a circle around us while we did our first dance. Instead of everyone sitting and chatting, everyone was surrounding US and watching as we danced. The combination of being surrounded by friends and family while also being outside as the sun set made this moment super emotional for me. I have never felt so happy and loved in one moment.”
Congratulations to you both, Ciera & Devan! Thank you so much for including Dress Gallery in your wedding day; it looks absolutely beautiful!

When to Buy a Wedding Gown Based Off Your Engagement Timeline

September 5, 2018

So you’re having an average engagement length (~1 year)…

Congratulations! On average, most brides spend a year to a year and a half planning their weddings. This gives them more than enough time to get all the necessary parts together while also dealing with the stresses of life. If you have an “average” wedding engagement, here’s a concise timeline of what to expect regarding finding, ordering, and fitting your gown.

  1. Create a vision board with inspiration of your perfect dress. Whether you utilize Pinterest or use your own materials, researching silhouettes, necklines, and detailing you like makes it easier to choose!
  2. Book an appointment at a bridal salon. Almost every boutique prefers appointments to walk-ins, as it’s easier for consultants to help find your perfect dress when they know they have at least 90 minutes with you. Be respectful of your consultant’s time; if you don’t find your dress, schedule a time to come back! Consultants love seeing return brides and it makes scheduling easier for everyone.

But when should I schedule my appointment?

    1. Any time after you get engaged! While you’re welcome to book with us anytime, one year to nine months prior to your wedding is prime dress ordering time. Why? Because often, designers’ shipping times for dresses are anywhere from 4 to 6 months after ordering. That means we’ll receive your dress with MORE than enough time to get it fitted, altered, and accessorized for your big day.
    2. We recommend limiting yourself to just a few bridal salons. Overwhelming yourself with options can cause insecurity, doubt, dissatisfaction in the process, and having more choices than you’d actually want.’
    3. Trust your stylist. We might be biased, but we know our inventory! We see these gowns in the bag AND on bodies every single day. We will never pull over price point without discussing with you first and your stylist should ask questions to really narrow down your search!

  • YOU SAID YES! Now what? We special order your dress! Your wedding gown will be made for you at ordering, which is why all sales are final. Your dress will arrive based off the designers’ shipping schedule. Once it arrives, you come in for a fitting. When the dress balance has been paid, she’s yours to take home!

But what about alterations?

  1. Good question! At DG, we don’t do alterations in house. We refer out to Juliana at Quikstitch, whom we LOVE. We recommend to all brides that they give their seamstress at least two months to alter their wedding dress in order for everything to be done appropriately.

So you’re having an extra-long engagement (~18 months plus)

Awesome! We love when brides give themselves plenty of time to plan their special day. You are welcome to come try dresses on anytime, however there are some tips and tricks we’ve learned along the way for in-advance brides:

  1. While there’s nothing stopping you from ordering your dress as soon as you like, taking the timeline into consideration is helpful. For instance, if your wedding is Fall 2020, you’re shopping too early! Your dress would arrive over a full YEAR before you need to consider alterations and it will need to be properly stored in the meantime. While we are happy to store it for you free of charge, DG’s company policy is all special order dresses need to be paid in full within 60 days of arrival. So just keep that in mind if you would like us to hold onto it until closer to your wedding day.
  2. If your wedding is more than 12 months away, there will also be new collections coming in the arriving seasons that could also fit your budget/theme AND your timeline. As all sales are final, it breaks our hearts when girls buy their dresses super early but then fall out of love!

So you’re having a super short engagement (~6 months or less)

Get ready, sister friend, because you are in for a fun six months! Planning a wedding on a short engagement can be stressful, but can also allow you to really prioritize and focus on what’s most important for you. When it comes to bridal gowns, your shopping situation is going to be vastly different than other brides.

  1. Ordering a new, custom dress in less than 6 months is often difficult to do. Have realistic expectations of what is possible within your timeline and discuss this with your bridal consultant. Sometimes, designers have certain dresses in certain sizes ready to go; other times, there’s just no way to get a new designer gown rushed that quickly. Your consultant will help you to the best of her ability, but expect some obstacles or an occasional “That can’t be done.”
  2. Schedule an appointment as quickly as possible. Like, yesterday. The sooner, the better because it gives you more options!
  3. If you can, buy the sample dress you tried on in store and look for sample sales. If you tried a dress you loved on in store in your size, or within 2 sizes of your size, many bridal salons will let you buy sample dresses for a discounted price. They often need slight fixes, like zipper replacements, due to the amount they were tried on, but buying a sample eliminates the order time and instead allows you to focus solely on alterations.
  4. If at all possible, be flexible. The more wiggle room you give yourself on timeline, price, and expectation, the more likely your consultant will be able to move mountains for your wedding day!

What’s the benefit of sample dresses & sample sales?

Sample sales allow for brides on a budget or time crunch to get a great dress within their means. Often, sample dresses are in great shape with minimal amount of TLC needed to get them back into great condition. Sample sales also allow brides to get designer gowns for a fraction of the original, re-orderable price. Buying a recently discontinued style in your size during a sample sale is a great way to get a unique gown without breaking the bank!

DG’s Top 10 FAV Hayley Paige Gowns

August 31, 2018

We love Hayley Paige. Ever since we began carrying her collection, (and we’re the only boutique in Kansas that does!), we’ve been obsessed with her modern romantic collection. We truly believe there’s a Hayley dress for every type of bride; whether you’re looking to complete your Disney Princess fairy tale or wear the chic gown of your dreams, Hayley has you covered. To get into the celebration of some brand new Hayley dresses coming into our store, we made a list of our top 10 favorite Hayley Paige gowns and trust me, you’re about to fall in love!

Number 10: Dori

Dori packs a punch with sparkle! This beautiful, open-backed gown features a dramatic bottom matched only by the intricate beaded detailing on the bodice. Combined with the alabaster coloring and this dress is sure to be the star of your ceremony.

Number 9: Hawthorne

Ethereal, colorful, and dreamy – this gown is PERFECT for anyone planning a fairy tale-esque wedding. The only thing missing is the magical unicorn to take you & your spouse off into the sunset!

Number 8: Kaitlyn

Why choose just one look when you can have two? This two-piece, pastel-orchid colored gown can WOW at your ceremony with the beaded, floral, tulle overskirt that features a horsehair hem. When the party comes, remove the skirt for a beautiful fit-and-flare gown with beaded detailing throughout. This is a fun & funky way of having multiple looks at your wedding!

Number 7: Chandon

The Hayley Paige dress of all our dreams! This elegant blush ball gown has completely captivated us since the moment we saw it. With petite straps, a sweetheart neckline, and a net of “secret sparkle” in the skirt, Chandon is the ultimate dress for ceremonies formal and relaxed alike. Also available in Ivory for a more traditional color.

Number 6: Guindon

Chic stripes, a sweetheart neckline, and a pop of color added via the belt makes Guindon a one-of-a-kind dress for a truly one-of-a-kind bride. The geometric aspect of the stripes is balanced out by the ruffled skirt, keeping a modern and cool look with the silhouette of something romantic. For the bold bride not afraid to turn heads, Guindon is a perfect match!

Number 5: Edie

Not a ball gown type of girl? Don’t worry, Hayley still has you covered. Edie is made from ivory silk crepe in a sheath shape, making your wedding day as comfortable as comfortable can be. The deep V neck and T back add drama to the dress, but the real star is the celestial-like beading throughout the bodice and hips. For a laid back, boho bride who still wants to sparkle, Edie is perfect!

Number 4: Billie

Another colorful dress that looks like it came down straight from the stars. Detailed with moonstones and alabaster appliques, this Arctic Moon dress is reminiscent of a celestial beauty, complete with rhinestone straps and a sweeping sweetheart neckline. We love how softly feminine and unique Billie is!

Number 3: Lorelei

Whimsical, romantic, elegant – Lorelei is everything every bride dreams of being. Paired with soft lace illusion sleeves and floral beading, this dress is perfect for every ceremony from formal to a garden party. Able to be paired with everything from soft jewelry to flower crowns, Lorelei is the ultimate ball gown for brides of any style.

Number 2: Cleo

There are very few dresses in the world like Cleo – and that’s the whole point! This dress is a STATEMENT for any bride who truly wants to the spotlight on her big day. An A-line dress with an open back, deeeeeep sweetheart neckline, and full crepe skirt is a gorgeously simple design that lets you stand out in the neckline. The absolute BEST part? It has pockets!

The dress that took our BREATH away. We might be biased because we are one of the first retailers in the WORLD to carry this beautiful gown, but I mean…just look at it! A bandage knit mermaid dress with DRAMA, this dress is made to hug and accentuate every perfect curve of your body. The bodice is embossed with opalescent foil, making you shimmer with every step you take. Combined with a horsehair trim and open back, you’ll fall so in love with Glazer, you’ll never want to take her off!

#dgbride: Amanda

August 25, 2018

Amanda and Jackson were married 10/14/2017 – a rainy ceremony in Riverside Park under trees freshly losing their leaves.

Guests held umbrellas and the groom’s jacket was spotted with rain.

Her bridesmaids wore mix-matched dresses that spoke to their own personalities, and coordinated their jewel toned shoes accordingly.

The bride’s vintage turquoise dazzled against her bright-white gown by Kenneth Winston, plain but extraordinarily beautiful. Her cathedral veil was handmade by our consultant, Katie. Amanda walked down the aisle lined with Southwest throws, a dazzling array of flowers in her hair.

What do we love about Amanda’s wedding? She owned her look and instantly became unforgettable. People wore whatever they wanted.

That’s what we tend to love about brides…each one is unique. But Amanda? She’s one of those bride’s we’ll never forget.

#dgbride: Gabriela

August 24, 2018

Gabriela, affectionately known as Gabie, married her high school sweetheart Anthony on June 3rd, 2017, at St. Mark Catholic Church in Colwich, Kansas. Their reception site was at Villa Luna in west Wichita.

Gabie knew instantly she wanted bright colors for her summer wedding, choosing blush, golds, and navy as her color palette for an “Elegant Italian”-themed wedding. St. Mark’s was the perfect choice for their ceremony venue, as the couple shared a history with the church and also loved the cathedral-inspired architecture. She kept the floral and decor within the church neutral and light to highlight the already breathtaking construction. A friend helped with all the wedding decor at Villa Luna – including set up!

“She set up our reception with a group of people that offered to help and Anthony and I did not get to see the venue at all until we walked in for the party on our wedding day. It had all come together way better than we expected and it was an awesome surprise!”

Even with some slight rain on their wedding day, these two did not let the weather get their spirits down. A few well color-coordinated umbrellas shielded them from the rain but also added a unique feature to their wedding photos! Plus, did you know it is good luck to have rain on your wedding day?!

When it comes to picking a favorite memory, Gabie listed two special wedding day moments that tugged at our heartstrings. The first was opening the church’s beautiful double doors to see her anxiously awaiting husband at the end of the aisle – “My heart was pounding and I wanted to run to him!”

The second favorite memory is one we don’t hear constantly, but one we all personally love. “Another great memory for me was having my mom and sisters help me put on my wedding dress and shoes,” Gabie said. “I am the youngest of the family and having the women I look up to most being with me for that moment was everything and one of my favorite things our videographer captured.”

When it comes to choosing a dress, Gabie did things the hard way – with appointments at over 8 bridal stores, a trip to Kansas City, and trying on hundreds of dresses, it was during a return appointment to Dress Gallery where she finally said “Yes!” Gabie initially thought she wanted a strapless mermaid dress with minimal bling or lace – almost the opposite of what her actual perfect dress ended up looking like! After trying on a dress like she described, Gabie found herself underwhelmed and lacking the emotional connection to the dress she wanted.

“It was pretty discouraging. How could the dress I described not be the one? Then, my dress consultant brought a dress that she knew was the total opposite of what I said I wanted and my best friend just told me to go for it. I reluctantly put it on and when I walked out, I was blown away. My breath was literally taken away! I was in shock but knew instantly no dress had given me this feeling before and wouldn’t again.”

Planning a big day, especially when you come from two large families, can be super stressful. Gabie’s advice to new brides is to not sweat the small stuff! We love her simple, classic advice that every bride should follow: “Take a deep breath and follow your heart on what will make you and your fiancé happy on YOUR special day.”

Having a great group of vendors, along with a supportive group of friends and family, on your side also changes the wedding game for sure. A lot of the actual wedding day logistical work can often be picked up by enthusiastic and willing family members in order to help with your big day. Ask friends & family to do the menial tasks for you, if they’re available – picking up flowers or dry cleaning, creating easy centerpieces, helping with set up and tear down the day of the event. Most people will be excited you asked them to help in your big day and it also relieves some stress off your shoulders!

Gabie gave us one last little piece of advice for new brides that we love so much, we’d make it mandatory for everyone if we could. It’s the simplest, littlest thing to make a lasting impact on your day – schedule private time post-ceremony to cuddle with your fiancé.

“Even if it’s just ten minutes to take some private photos,” Gabie said. “The reception will be crazy and lots of fun, so some quality time to just soak up your ceremony and spend a few quiet moments together makes the chaos worth it!”

Thank you so much, Gabie, for being a #DGBride and letting us have a sneak peek into your big day! We were so happy to be a part of your journey; we wish you and Anthony all the love and happiness.
