Fun Wedding Food Ideas for Your Event

November 5, 2018

Besides seeing loved ones marry their partner, the best part of any wedding is most definitely the food and drink. A great guest experience can be cultivated by really focusing on the unique and extraordinary. Say “buh-bye” to the standard wedding buffet and boring bartender and instead have your guest create unforgettable memories on your special day by including fun twists on food and drink!

Here’s a list of some of our favorite (and funnest) food and drink experiences you can incorporate:

A pretzel bar with all the dippin’s

What better way to say “thanks” to your wedding guests for watching you tie the knots than a fabulous soft pretzel bar? Whether individually wrapped in cute bags or hanging from a pre-made display, soft pretzels are almost universally loved. Combined with fun dips, this gives your guest a perfect finger food with customization available. Whether a late night, after drinks option or simply combined with cocktail hour, we are anxiously waiting to eat ALL the pretzels at any wedding.

Artistically beautiful and masterfully placed charcuterie boards

Everyone loves to say charcuterie, (it’s such a fun word!), but we’re believers that everyone loves a good board spread, too. Standard boards feature meats and cheeses, but intense charcuterie boards are nothing short of a work of art. Combined with edible flowers, honey, berries and fruits, veggies, bread options, and more, charcuterie boards feel luxurious and grand with minimal effort. It allows the food to be edible decor! Large, long tables of open-plated food often feels royal and also allows your guests to snack throughout the night without the need for servers.

Savory shooters

Finger foods are the perfect way to keep your guests well fed and entertained throughout the entire night, but they’re even better with foods in miniature that most wouldn’t expect! Instead of the usual hors d oeuvres or small desserts, we love the idea of taking savory foods and making them into a fun and playful addition! Grilled cheese and tomato soup shooters are perfect example for a chilly winter or fall wedding.

S’mores buffet smorgasbord

While the idea of s’mores at a wedding isn’t super new, that doesn’t mean we don’t love the idea. I mean, who isn’t a fan of chocolate, graham crackers, and marshmallows toasted to perfection? Recently, we’ve seen more and more couples decide against the pre-wrapped s’mores favors and instead have their own s’mores buffet! It’s an interactive source of food for your guests, but also super nostalgic. Any wedding could benefit from more s’mores, we’re simply waiting for the coziest wedding photos featuring a cute couple spinning marshmallows over the fire!

Pickle bars satisfy every craving

We know, but hang with us for a second – pickle bars have been popping up everywhere in wedding world and we are HERE FOR IT. A combination of the ultimate bar food wit an upscale appetizer, pickle bars allow for a crunchy and salty treat while also having interesting, unique, and delicious pickle combinations that guests definitely have never experienced before. This is also a prime opportunity to utilize local farmers and fresh produce, creating a totally organic guest experience. Plus, every pregnant friend you have will thank you.

Wonderful world full of waffles

We’re big believers in always letting out your inner Leslie Knope – she’s kind of a big deal around DG. So when we began seeing waffle bar options pop up, we knew that Leslie and Ron Swanson would approve. This breakfast-anytime food feature fills up your guests with flavorful food without being overly sweet; having multiple toppings allows for sweet tooths to load up, while guests with more savory palettes could enjoy a more lunch-centered meal. Many waffle bars have added fried chicken, creating an undeniable chicken-and-waffle experience that will leave your friends talking about your wedding for years.

Calling all local food trucks!

We are all about convenience and we’re not sure if there’s REALLY a better idea for your catering than having it be on wheels! What’s easier when it comes to set up and tear down? Having your local food truck cater your wedding event is a great way to get community members involved while also having an engaging and unique experience for your guests. Instead of waiting in a slow moving buffet lines, guests can interact with each other in an outdoor space dedicated to food and fun. The best part is there really is a food truck for everything – want Hawaiian? Barbecue? Tacos? Gyros? Just about every type of cuisine can be found within the food truck realm !

DG Spotlight: Alex

November 2, 2018

Here at #DGWichita, we have the best team. We’re so proud of our staff and the excellent customer service we strive to provide. Besides putting the client first, our DG employees are hardworking and unique women with drives, passions, and goals both in the store and beyond. In our DG Spotlight series, we wanted to introduce you to the fabulous women who make up DG. First is our Formalwear Specialist, Alex!

Alex is our Formal wear Specialist and tuxedo guru. She manages the Menswear department of Dress Gallery and was essential in expansion earlier this year. Her primary objective at DG is to make sure your men look good, which means she has an eye for detail and fit. She’s super knowledgeable about menswear and trends, which makes her the ultimate tuxedo consultant when trying to navigate the big, scary world of formal wear. When she’s not keeping the Menswear department running smoothly, she’s an expert at helping prom and homecoming girls find their dream dance dress. Also love our fun and creative monthly window displays? That’s mostly Alex!

Alex has been with DG since June of 2017 and has quickly grown into an essential part of our world. (Hear that Alex? Don’t ever leave us, Menswear needs you, we love you so much.) She helps keep the busy, bustling area of tuxedos in an orderly fashion! And she’s a big advocate for making sure your guys don’t go forgotten on your big day.

“Outfitting your men with our rental menswear is the best idea because it’s often an affordable option for most guys, plus we do all the hard, behind the scenes work for you to help the week of your wedding running smoothly! Having trained professionals on your side with menswear guarantees the men you love look perfect on your special day!”

When asked why she loves being a DG Girl, Alex is all about the people. “I love all of the people,” she said. “The customers, my coworkers, just generally getting to be around happy people during an important event in their lives. I also love seeing and hearing about all the local events, which makes me proud to be part of a small business.”

(Can we talk about how cute Alex and our Style Specialist, Hunter, are in their mini photoshoot? We’re obsessed.)

Alex worked in bridal previously before joining the DG staff. After seeing some trends come and go, she has a definite eye for which styles and fits are classic, while others are more trendy and modern. For upcoming wedding trends, Alex is most excited to see grooms and groomsmen embracing their individual styles.

“I love the uniqueness we’re seeing in menswear,” Alex said. “Textures and patterns are becoming really prominent and I love seeing guy embrace their own style. Also, I’d love to have a bride or female prom court member rock a fabulous tuxedo for their look!”

If Alex could give any advice to guys (and girls!) for tuxedo consultations, it’s one simple thing – bring your fiance with you! They have an opinion and they matter in this decision. Pick something YOU feel comfortable in, but also will have your future spouse’s tastes in mind, too. Also, you need to know things like wedding colors, florals, and more to help pick outfits to match. If you don’t know those, you’ll need your fiance!”

Outside of DG world, Alex is finishing up her bachelor’s degree at Wichita State. She’s also an artist with a particular love for ceramics and pottery. Her and her husband, Austin, love going to museums! And because we’re all foodies at DG, the quintessential question: what’s your favorite Wichita restaurant?

“Doo-Dah Diner, Espresso to Go Go, River City Brewery, and my current favorite is Dempsey’s Biscuit Co,” she said. “I love me a chicken sandwich.”

#dgbride: Marie

October 22, 2018

Every so often, a couple touches our hearts here in the salon and we get so excited to share their wedding. Marie and Garrett’s wedding is one of those weddings. Married on November 17, 2017 at The Hudson, these two had been together eight years before they officially tied the knot! We’re obsessed with these two and their love – take a peek at the beautiful wedding of #TeamBrummett!

Marie is a neutral type of girl, so when it came to picking out her wedding color palette, she kept it true to her style – simple and neutral! Her wedding featured lots of fabulous greenery, but almost no flowers – which totally complimented her modern, chic vibe! Picking flowers out began to stress Marie out, so she decided against them almost entirely! Instead, they focused on other, more industrial details to pair with their exposed brick and beams reception venue!

For her dress, Marie chose a fabulous Maggie Sottero gown with a fitted silhouette to compliment her petite frame. Beading and lace made the dress “pop” even more! Although the dress she chose, her dress was not what she envisioned when she first came into DG!

“I thought that I wanted something flowy and bohemian,” Marie said. “I kept feeling uncomfortable in the unfitted dresses. Kind of like trying on prom dresses – they were pretty, but they weren’t “The One.” When my consultant starting bringing me things opposite of what I asked for, I started lighting up! The funny thing was when my consultant brought me my dress, it had this mesh overlay that was 3/4 sleeves and came up to my neck – I HATED IT. But then she took the mesh off and there was my dress! I asked her to add silk spaghetti straps and voila – it was perfect!”

Marie tried on six dresses at DG before finding her perfect gown and our salon was the only place she visited!

“My experience was fantastic! It was so low key and I felt comfortable sharing what I liked and disliked with my consultant. Plus, there was room for my girls and no pressure to buy that day.”

Marie is a pro when it comes to giving wedding advice. Although she’d been anxiously awaiting planning her wedding for years, when it arrived, even she was overwhelmed! She gave a great nugget of advice to newly engaged brides: “Don’t try to re-invent the wheel when so many people have done the hard work for you!” She utilized Pinterest and the Knot’s wedding checklist to help plan her wedding, but otherwise let the chips fall where they may!

This also leads into our SECOND favorite piece of advice from Marie: “Pick three to five things you really care about for the wedding. Outside of that, don’t sweat it. Let people help you and don’t be afraid to do something non traditional. If you don’t like the Macarena, don’t play it. If you don’t like heels, don’t wear them. It’s YOUR big day – don’t make it someone else’s!”

We are absolutely FLOORED by these beautiful images courtesy of Tori Christine Photography. They perfectly capture Marie & Garrett’s love! Thank you so much to Marie & Garrett for letting us be a part of your special day!

Unique Wedding Arbors for Every Wedding Type

October 9, 2018

Tired of the traditional wedding arbors? While simplistic, rustic wood adorned with flowers is classic, it’s also slightly overdone. We’ve created a list of unique and interesting arbors sure to inspire you for your big day. Highlighting your personality as a couple with your arbor creates a sense of presence within your ceremony, but also makes for breathtakingly refreshing photos. Check out some of our favorites below!

Rustic Chic Wedding Arbors

If you’re the type of bride who’s more likely to wear boots with your dress, these rustic chic arbors combine feminine details with natural wood elements.

This beautiful barn door backdrop mixes romance and whimsy, while also feeling upscale surrounded by white florals, greenery, and iron detailing!

How cute is this DIY pallet arbor? Created by mixing wood stains and a blush floral palette, this is a great combo for a modern yet rustic touch!

Utilizing nature’s own beauty can save a bargain on renting or creating an arbor! Decorating the ceremony’s natural surrounding keeps the focus on the natural touches!

Fall weddings are becoming more popular than summer weddings and what better for your wedding, handfasting ceremony, or more than an all-branch archway? The stark contrast of sticks compared to the beautiful fall colored leaves creates a magical vibe.

Heavy Floral Arbors

Whether you’re picturing a garden fairy tale wedding or simply just ready for a floral explosion, these arbors are a perfect to create a bright and dramatic pop of color!

We LOVE this sunflower aisle leading up to a beautiful bloom of yellow! This spring wedding is genuinely bright and airy, guaranteeing a sunshine vibe throughout the entire wedding.

Florals aren’t only for spring! This winter wedding was littered with rose flower petals and deep, moody florals surrounding a raw edge arbor. These red and green combos perfectly match the gorgeous mountain backdrop!

Who says an arbor needs to have corners? This whimsical and unique circle arbor is entirely adorned with greenery and pampas grass, a perfect beach-themed centerpiece to any destination or coastal wedding. This would be a great option for a bride looking for a modern statement but keep the feminine touch of florals.

We LOVE greenery. Whether palm, monstera, eucalyptus, or more, the beautiful simplicity of tropical greenery allows for YOU to shine while effortlessly adding your beach vibe.

Modern Geometric Arbors

Are you a bride determined to change the pace when it comes to your wedding? If the traditional formal-looking arbors aren’t your style, check these fabulously trendy wedding backdrops guaranteed to add a totally cool piece!

These wooden triangles create a striking visual for the modern bride and groom. Combined with moody florals and an eye-catching rug aisle, this arbor is a great option for the bride wanting drama in her photos.

We might be biased, but this mixed metal geometrical arbor is one of our favs! This bride used tilted symmetry to create stark lines and unique corners compared to traditional arbors. Mixed with white, blue, and yellow flowers, the florals keep this arbor’s angles still soft and feminine!

Tepee arbors are becoming increasingly popular, especially for bohemian brides. For someone wanting a deep connection with nature and spirituality, tepees create a symbolic visual meant to be culturally celebrative of Native peoples and traditions.

Triangles not your shape? Try hexagons! One giant hexagon creates a perfect distinct frame for you and your loved one on your big day! These are easy to DIY and can fit a multitude of different wedding themes!

Triangles, hexagons, quadrilaterals oh my! This couple takes the love of modern, geometric lines to a whole new level, which also creates shelving space for flowers and candles!

Vintage, Whimsical, Trendy Arbors

Maybe the traditional arbors aren’t for you, but the harsh lines of something geometric doesn’t fit either. For our bride looking for romance with a touch of vintage, these trendy wedding arbors are a great choice!

Macrame is having a MOMENT, okay? Bohemian and romantic, this fringed, woven design creates a beautiful backdrop without taking the focus away from the couple. Pair with florals for a simple but powerful statement!

Wanting something a little moodier? A dark screen or room divider can add a touch of vintage and metal to your wedding. This allows for texture behind you during the ceremony, but also captures a sense of femininity when paired with cascading florals.

Create visual depth by doing multiple heights throughout the arbor; this multi rectangle arbor is simply 2x4s made together, but the varying heights make for a unique backdrop  The bright greenery and florals can also cover the arbor feet!

We love terrariums, metals, and fun shapes! These hanging geometric terrariums add fun decoration to a simplistic copper arbor keeps the look clean, chic, and simple!

Arbors for the Bold

Ready to REALLY shock your wedding guests? These arbors are for the wild, creative, and truly different. We are digging these trendsetting designs!

Marriage is all about love and peace! This arbor takes the traditional circle and adds a fun twist, complete with disco balls for sparkle and tinsel drapings to match. Regardless of season, this arbor is a great option for the couple who really wants to wow on their wedding day.

Show your love through lights! We are obsessed with the custom neon trend right now. Whether personalized with names or simply choosing a phrase fitting for your event, neon is a cool and trendy way to bring color and brightness to your wedding in an edgy way.

Any bibliophile would LOVE this arch! Created out of second had books, this arbor surrounds any true readers with pages and pages of adventures before the couple begins their own!

When in doubt….go black!! Black is gaining favor in weddings but we’re still surprised when we see a bride willing to create such a bold statement. The addition of Edison lights and twigs creates an interesting juxtaposition between industrial and natural, which we love!

#dgbride: Jaime

September 28, 2018

Our beautiful bride, Jaime, married her soulmate, Caleb, on August 10, 2018. They planned their intimate destination wedding in Rocky Mountain National Park, surrounded by beautiful mountain scenery and rolling fields.

Jaime wanted her big day to be as relaxed and laid back as possible. With such gorgeous natural backdrops, the couple decided they wanted to keep their details minimal, matching the greenery to the surrounding natural foliage. She wanted to keep the atmosphere of the entire day stress free and focused on the mountains!

Their primary color palette included wine, greenery, and neutrals such as blush and grey. Combined with the golden hour sunlight, their pictures were a perfect transition from late summer into early autumn. The pops of vibrant merlot combined with the bridal party’s different textures created such depth. Her bridesmaids featured sequinning and velvet while the groomsmen donned tweed suits.

When it comes to planning their big day, Jaime utilized elopement help! “Marry Me in Colorado” is a destination wedding planning service that allows out of town brides an easier time planning and executing their destination dreams. Different packages included different services, but Jaime utilized “Marry Me in Colorado” for a wedding day coordinator, popular ceremony spots, officiants, hair and makeup recommendations, cakes, and more! When it comes to destination wedding services, however, Jaime has some great advice.

“They were helpful, but if I could go back, I would just hire an officiant and purchase a permit directly through Rocky Mountain National Park to get married there. Since my wedding was very small and low key, there were a lot of extras I didn’t need!”

Jaime’s favorite memory of her wedding day was her first look with her husband, Caleb. Jaime was unsure of whether to do a first look, but eventually decided having the small, quiet moment with Caleb prior to their ceremony was important – and she’s glad she did! The two exchanged personal vows between each other before saying vows publicly during their ceremony.

“It was such an intimate and surreal moment,” Jaime said. “I love that I have photos and video to re-live the moment whenever I want.”

Creating Jaime’s wedding day look was a little different than the traditional bridal experience. Jaime’s dress featured separates added together to create a customized bridal gown. The skirt, topper, and belt were curated specifically for her perfect bridal look! Her off-the-shoulder lace topper was perfect for her bohemian vibe and the tulle skirt gave her a comfortable fit for the entire day – and fit the whimsical, romantic mountain scenery. Jaime’s dress was the perfect combination of chic and stylish, along with comfortable for her outdoor ceremony!

“I knew from the minute I got engaged I wanted lace and I wanted sleeves,” Jaime said of her bridal experience. “I’ve always adored the ‘boho’ style and Katie NAILED it with matching pieces that originally didn’t even go together! It was pretty much spot on for what I imagined in my head.”

“My experience was nothing short of amazing,” Jaime said. “Katie and all the other girls at Dress Gallery were very helpful and so sweet. They even helped me pick out jewelry during my final fitting!”

Jaime’s final words are GREAT words of advice for newly engaged brides: “Do what YOU want. Why waste the money on something that’s not going to make you happy?”

We concur! This intimate, mountainous getaway seems so cozy and special – a perfect representation of Jaime and Caleb’s love. We congratulate you both and wish you a lifetime of happiness!

Thank you to Kara and Mackenzie Photography for the photos!

Check back next week for another #DGBride!

Ten 2019 Wedding Trends We LOVE

September 14, 2018

For those brides who are looking for their ceremonies to stay trendy and fresh, there’s a huge variety of styles that allow you to custom curate your special day. These are some of the trends we’re seeing as brides begin to plan their 2019 weddings and we LOVE them. Add one or even a few to your own reception or ceremony to help create a trendy, yet timeless, look!

We are LOVING the mixed metals and multiple metallic looks! Gunmetal, silver, gold, rose gold, and more all mixed together can help give your wedding an interesting, “edgy” vibe without going over the top on color. Plus, since metals often serve as the neutral color in a color palette, this is the perfect opportunity to let your jewelry and details make a statement! Spice up your wedding with “rocker-chic” vibes by adding a chunky mixed metal necklace or multiple stacked bracelets.

Trend #2: SUIT UP

Sayonara, overt femininity and hello, androgyny! Bridal suits, whether two pieces or just a jumpsuit, have taken over the bridal runway. Perfect for tomboy brides or someone wanting to feel extra unique on their wedding day, bridal jumpsuits are rising in popularity due to their modern silhouette and comfortable design. Who doesn’t love a comfortable jumpsuit to party the night away in?

These are NOT your grandmother’s wedding dresses! Modern day brides are shying away from traditional white and ivory gowns and instead are focusing on more ways to bring color into their wedding – including their own gowns! While pastel colors still reign supreme (think blush, periwinkle, or silver), there are more than a few designers adding vibrant splashes to their collection. It’s a surefire way to stand out during your wedding!

While the trend in outdoor weddings will never fully go away, more and more brides are preferring indoor venues with open-air concepts or closed venues with tons of greenery to brighten up the space. For outdoor enthusiasts who would love some extra green in their wedding, but can’t/don’t like outdoor weddings, bringing greenery into your décor is a perfect way to make your ceremony feel romantic and intimate. Popular options now include eucalyptus vines, palm leaves, and even wheat bundles – a personal favorite of ours here in the Heartland.

We genuinely feel like videographers don’t often get the credit they deserve. Instead of your traditional wedding highlight reel, many videographers are going above and beyond for their couples by creating spectacular memories. The most popular method is utilizing drones, particularly for those gorgeous overhead shots. Birds’ eye view perspectives have become extremely popular, along with occasional “gag reel” supplied by your videographer of all the days’ best goofs! Ask your vendor professional if they have the capability to do these unique features for you.

Finally, the men get some love! While mismatching bridesmaids’ dresses have been popular for quite some time, for some reason, the other side of the aisle has stayed traditionally matching. Now, grooms especially are spicing up their party by allowing each of their groomsmen a unique look. Stay within the wedding color palette and this funky variety look will surely be a hit at your event!

Royal wedding inspiration is in full swing! Instead of the traditional veil, many brides have been swapping out the tulle for a unique tiara or extra-sparkly hair pins. Some brides are even “pulling a Meghan” with both accessories including! With the beautiful, messy low-bun we’ve been seeing on a lot of brides, tiaras and hair pieces have become our newest favorite trend. We love seeing the brides curate their outfit, complete with hair!

A memento from your wedding used to be standard fare for many couples, but the guests’ party favors have fallen out of favor in recent years. Instead of spending money on small keepsakes, brides and grooms instead are budgeting to create a unique guest experience. Mobile camper photobooths, magicians, specialty cocktails, lipstick “touch up” bars, or complimentary cigars on the patio are just some examples of “extra” guests experience options that enhance your attendee’s enjoyment but avoids the mundane favors.

While there’s nothing new about adding pieces of your favorite movies, books, music, or more to your wedding, having your preferred fandom make appearance throughout the night is a fun way to keep guests guessing. Many brides and grooms are opting for “geeky” details to help personalize their wedding. Whether ending your vows with “Live long and prosper” or waving wands at each other during your photos, there are plenty of ways to geekify your ceremony without making your love of fantasy/sci-fi the focus.

Geodes, minerals, crystals, and other natural stones are making a huge impact in the wedding world. These organic-looking elements add a touch of edge to your event while still maintaining a romantic, elegant vibe. We’ve seen brides use geodes as interesting table placements/seating chart cards to wearing minerals in their hair to even having their engagement rings be natural stone! Don’t be afraid to use Mother Nature’s most beautiful gems to help give your day a unique feel.

#dgbride: Ciera

September 10, 2018

Dress Gallery bride Ciera married her soulmate, Devan, on May 19, 2018 at Fulton Valley Farms in Towanda, KS. After 5 years of being together, this couple was ready to celebrate their #VowsInTheValley! (How cute is their wedding hashtag, btw? Shocker fans for life!)

For Ciera and Devan, having an outdoor ceremony and an indoor reception was high on their priority list. However, with a May wedding in Kansas, the weather can be unpredictable. Ciera loved the flexibility of Fulton Valley Farms, as they offered an inside ceremony should inclement weather arise. Thankfully, there was no need! Their open air wedding was full of love and sunshine for their special day.

Ciera didn’t want an “overly rustic” feeling to her wedding, which made Fulton Valley a perfect choice. Their color palette of blues, ivory, and silvers kept their wedding theme classic, complete with muscle cars and fun backdrops for photos! Also included were the beautiful colored string lights that gave their nighttime reception an ethereal glow.

When it came to picking out a wedding dress, Ciera was a bride who had a sharp idea of what she wanted. “My dress was fairly simple,” she said. “I didn’t want anything poofy, strapless, or with lace. Instead, I wanted something that was going to be comfortable and easy to move in. My ideal dress was going to have an open back and small detail. The dress I ended up choosing was similar to what I had pictured in my head.”

“I tried on five or six dresses and only visited Dress Gallery,” Ciera said of her experience. “I got the dress the first day I went. I’m normally really indecisive, so I didn’t want to go to too many places and give myself too many options. Plus, I knew from my friends’ experience that I wanted to purchase at Dress Gallery. Jillian has a great eye for locating things that fit your style but will also look great on you!”
Ciera was a superwoman and planned the majority of her wedding herself. Utilizing Pinterest, Facebook wedding groups, and friends & family, she kept organized and focused on her vision to see everything come to fruition. Some of her advice? “Get a videographer! For real. I can’t even tell you how many times I have watched our wedding highlight video. It is the perfect reminder of how great our day was. It’s something I’ll get to cherish forever and have to show our future children.” (To take a peek at Ciera & Devan’s highlight video, click here!)
Also important to remember on wedding day is Ciera’s next piece of advice – don’t stress! “You’re not getting married for the wedding. You’re getting married for the relationship. Even if you spill something on your dress, lose the ring (which momentarily happened with my husband’s wedding band on our big day – luckily it was found in the grass hours later!), or forget something, you’re still getting married to the love of your life at the end of the day.”
Ciera wasn’t the only #DGGirl in her wedding party, either – all of her bridesmaids and her flower girl also became #DGGirls as well! We love it when brides trust us with making their loved ones look at beautiful as possible standing next to them. Ciera chose matching classic cornflower blue chiffon dresses for her girls, which made her ivory and silver accents really sparkle! She picked up her accessories and headbands from our jewelry department, too! Look at this GIRL SQUAD GOALS.
When we asked Ciera her favorite memory from her wedding, even she was surprised at the answer. “My favorite memory by far was our first dance. It’s funny because I thought that I wouldn’t like this part that much (I’m not a big dancer and first dances always seemed awkward.) But our DJ moved our dance floor outside and told everyone to gather in a circle around us while we did our first dance. Instead of everyone sitting and chatting, everyone was surrounding US and watching as we danced. The combination of being surrounded by friends and family while also being outside as the sun set made this moment super emotional for me. I have never felt so happy and loved in one moment.”
Congratulations to you both, Ciera & Devan! Thank you so much for including Dress Gallery in your wedding day; it looks absolutely beautiful!

Stay tuned next week for our next featured bride!

When to Buy a Wedding Gown Based Off Your Engagement Timeline

September 5, 2018

So you’re having an average engagement length (~1 year)…

Congratulations! On average, most brides spend a year to a year and a half planning their weddings. This gives them more than enough time to get all the necessary parts together while also dealing with the stresses of life. If you have an “average” wedding engagement, here’s a concise timeline of what to expect regarding finding, ordering, and fitting your gown.

  1. Create a vision board with inspiration of your perfect dress. Whether you utilize Pinterest or use your own materials, researching silhouettes, necklines, and detailing you like makes it easier to choose!
  2. Book an appointment at a bridal salon. Almost every boutique prefers appointments to walk-ins, as it’s easier for consultants to help find your perfect dress when they know they have at least 90 minutes with you. Be respectful of your consultant’s time; if you don’t find your dress, schedule a time to come back! Consultants love seeing return brides and it makes scheduling easier for everyone.

But when should I schedule my appointment?

    1. Any time after you get engaged! While you’re welcome to book with us anytime, one year to nine months prior to your wedding is prime dress ordering time. Why? Because often, designers’ shipping times for dresses are anywhere from 4 to 6 months after ordering. That means we’ll receive your dress with MORE than enough time to get it fitted, altered, and accessorized for your big day.
    2. We recommend limiting yourself to just a few bridal salons. Overwhelming yourself with options can cause insecurity, doubt, dissatisfaction in the process, and having more choices than you’d actually want.’
    3. Trust your stylist. We might be biased, but we know our inventory! We see these gowns in the bag AND on bodies every single day. We will never pull over price point without discussing with you first and your stylist should ask questions to really narrow down your search!

  • YOU SAID YES! Now what? We special order your dress! Your wedding gown will be made for you at ordering, which is why all sales are final. Your dress will arrive based off the designers’ shipping schedule. Once it arrives, you come in for a fitting. When the dress balance has been paid, she’s yours to take home!

But what about alterations?

  1. Good question! At DG, we don’t do alterations in house. We refer out to Juliana at Quikstitch, whom we LOVE. We recommend to all brides that they give their seamstress at least two months to alter their wedding dress in order for everything to be done appropriately.

So you’re having an extra-long engagement (~18 months plus)

Awesome! We love when brides give themselves plenty of time to plan their special day. You are welcome to come try dresses on anytime, however there are some tips and tricks we’ve learned along the way for in-advance brides:

  1. While there’s nothing stopping you from ordering your dress as soon as you like, taking the timeline into consideration is helpful. For instance, if your wedding is Fall 2020, you’re shopping too early! Your dress would arrive over a full YEAR before you need to consider alterations and it will need to be properly stored in the meantime. While we are happy to store it for you free of charge, DG’s company policy is all special order dresses need to be paid in full within 60 days of arrival. So just keep that in mind if you would like us to hold onto it until closer to your wedding day.
  2. If your wedding is more than 12 months away, there will also be new collections coming in the arriving seasons that could also fit your budget/theme AND your timeline. As all sales are final, it breaks our hearts when girls buy their dresses super early but then fall out of love!

So you’re having a super short engagement (~6 months or less)

Get ready, sister friend, because you are in for a fun six months! Planning a wedding on a short engagement can be stressful, but can also allow you to really prioritize and focus on what’s most important for you. When it comes to bridal gowns, your shopping situation is going to be vastly different than other brides.

  1. Ordering a new, custom dress in less than 6 months is often difficult to do. Have realistic expectations of what is possible within your timeline and discuss this with your bridal consultant. Sometimes, designers have certain dresses in certain sizes ready to go; other times, there’s just no way to get a new designer gown rushed that quickly. Your consultant will help you to the best of her ability, but expect some obstacles or an occasional “That can’t be done.”
  2. Schedule an appointment as quickly as possible. Like, yesterday. The sooner, the better because it gives you more options!
  3. If you can, buy the sample dress you tried on in store and look for sample sales. If you tried a dress you loved on in store in your size, or within 2 sizes of your size, many bridal salons will let you buy sample dresses for a discounted price. They often need slight fixes, like zipper replacements, due to the amount they were tried on, but buying a sample eliminates the order time and instead allows you to focus solely on alterations.
  4. If at all possible, be flexible. The more wiggle room you give yourself on timeline, price, and expectation, the more likely your consultant will be able to move mountains for your wedding day!

What’s the benefit of sample dresses & sample sales?

Sample sales allow for brides on a budget or time crunch to get a great dress within their means. Often, sample dresses are in great shape with minimal amount of TLC needed to get them back into great condition. Sample sales also allow brides to get designer gowns for a fraction of the original, re-orderable price. Buying a recently discontinued style in your size during a sample sale is a great way to get a unique gown without breaking the bank!
